Cool things and weekend fun

Cool Things I Found Online

I always loved the “pocket knife/Swiss Army Knife” idea – but it’s hard to carry that on your key chain or get past security at a concert – and fuggit-about-it on an airplane.  BUT check this out!  From Garrett Wade – a key-shaped pocket knife!! These people are schmart!

Bacon Soap – that right, I said it – Bacon Soap…Why??

Need inspirations for your Halloween Costume – check outReVamp Vintage Creations.  Uhmmm, I’d love to look like one of the ladies from MAD MEN!

Bring on the Yiddish

Monday, September 28, 2009

I found this great article on popular Yiddish words and had to share!  Also, just in case you did not know what the word “yenta” meant – here is the correct answer: a female busybody or gossip. The matchmaker in “Fiddler on the Roof” was named Yenta which is why so many people mistakenly think that yenta means “matchmaker.”

Old Sneakers

Monday, September 21, 2009

Alright, so I’m still working on Spring Cleaning – even though it’s almost October.  Time to go through my shoes (I’m a girl, I have a lot.) I don’t know why, but I can never seem to let go of my sneakers – and I’m not talking about converse or other street sneakers… I’m talking about the type of real athletic shoes used for sports, going to the gym, etc.  I literally have 5 pairs that I no longer wear regularly.

Dining options…

Ask the Yenta

Wow!  Okay, so all three questions this week are about restaurant for specific occasions.

1)   From a 20-something guy wanting a restaurant for a first date in Hollywood – not romantic, but cool/hip/fun, and not too expensive.

2)   From a man wanting to take his sister out for a birthday dinner, emphasis on FUN.
3)   From a woman wanting to take her mother out for a really special lunch.

Fun date restaurants that won’t put a hole in your wallet.<div”>

Miceli’s – old-style Italian food where the waiters and waitresses sing, and we’re not talking karaoke — they can really sing!! (locations in Hollywood and Universal City, Cahuenga Blvd)

U-Wink – basic menu but the fun part is ordering on the touchscreen monitor at your table, PLUS you can play games, do trivia, and sip a cocktail!  (Hollywood at Hollywood and Highland)

The Great Greek – a long time favorite on Ventura Blvd. Yummy food, and they might pull you out of your seat to dance around the restaurant. Opa!! (Sherman Oaks)

Gyu-Kaku – Japanese BBQ where you cook the food yourself at the table, plus they often have great happy hour specials. (Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Sherman Oaks, Topanga Canyon)

Lunch with Mom

The Beverly Hills Hotel Polo Lounge – for the old Hollywood thing (Beverly Hills)

On the top of Barney’s New York is Barney’s Greengrass lunch and shop?!! (Beverly Hills)

Craft – lunch fit for a foodie. Note: lunch only during the week (Century City)

Spago – no explanation needed (Beverly Hills

10 Things I want from the IKEA catalogue

Monday, September 14, 2009

image

It’s not because you’re special – I think everyone in Los Angeles must get the IKEA catalogue.  I know it came out several weeks ago, but I’m just getting around to opening it now.  Flipping through the pages with a purpose, I found 10 things I HAVE to have from IKEA…Here it goes!

I’m on Holiday..

Ya, I’m on Vacation

Have a great holiday weekend everyone!

I will leave you with a recipe you can try for your BBQ – You know I love the color pink – so here is a recipe for fushia hummus – ya, baby!!

Care of blogger and punk photographer Libby Bulloff

Jitterbug Hummus

Written by libby on August 4th, 2009No, really–not Photoshop. My hummus is that fuchsia. It matches my head.

Jitterbug Hummus
It’s pink because of the fistful of beets in it from Local Roots Farm. Last week’s CSA box left me with a number of heavy vegetables to sort into meals, but it was so hot here (record high temperatures for all time in Seattle) that I didn’t feel comfortable loitering about the oven. Hummus seemed like a nice, cool alternative, and I’m a sucker for day-glo food.

I modded a recipe I found at AllRecipes.com. Here’s how I made it:

+  1 can of organic chickpeas, drained
+  1 large onion, chopped (from our CSA)
+  about 1 pound beets (from our CSA)
+  1/2 cup tahini (made in Seattle!)
+  3 cloves garlic, crushed (from our CSA–I used an entire tiny bulb)
+  1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
+  1 tablespoon ground cumin
+  1/4 cup olive oil

Drain your chickpeas and place in a large heavy saucepan. Add onion, cover with water and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook until the onion has softened up. Drain and set aside to cool, making sure you don’t throw out the cooking liquid. You’ll want to save about a cup of it for later.

Meanwhile, in a stock pot, cover beets with water and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook until the beets are soft enough to slice easily.  Drain and allow beets to cool a bit before removing the skins and chopping. I tossed all of the beet roots, tops, and skins back into the stock pot, and dyed some muslin with the bright pink juice, ’cause I’m crafty like that. :)

If you have a food processor, you can skip the next bit, but I have a very minimalist kitchen, so I had to do my hummus in stages. Get out a big mixing bowl, and dump in your beet chunks, chickpeas and onions, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, and cumin. I smacked all the ingredients around rather vigorously with one of my favorite kitchen implements: the potato masher. This enabled me to remove most of the really massive clumps in the mixture, and it’s kind of satisfying, smashing all of the brilliant vegetables together (feel free to make zombie noises here, and lick the bowl).

Once the mixture was mostly smooth, I processed small batches of it in my blender until it was as spreadable as commercially prepared hummus (though much, much brighter). Now’s a good time to throw in a bit of that cooking liquid you saved at the beginning, if your hummus is too chunky and is getting caught in the blender blades.

I also made a huge, pink, globby mess of the kitchen very late at night, which was strangely satisfying.

Serve your pink mess of joy with pita (and maybe a bib)! Mine has a little extra tahini and olive oil on top. Super yum.

What’s the next big thing?

Monday, August 31, 2009

Really, what is the next big thing?  What is going to move me?  What is going to make a big difference with the way we live?  I’m talking the “fountain of youth” or “speed of light airplane!” I want something that’s going to rock my world.  And not something that’s only going to be available to rich people – like flying to the moon.  I need something I can look forward to, something to make my life better – something to WOW me!?!  Something other than the latest iPhone… Anyone with me?

Kid’s art, keyboards and customized baby clothes!

Ask the Yenta

“Dear Yenta, My boss is currently looking for a children’s book illustrator for a self-published book he wrote.  Where should I look?”

Two places to try:

Storyopolis – they have a fantastic gallery featuring artwork by children’s book illustrators

“Dear Yenta, We need a keyboard player or some such musician to play background music (w/his own keyboard) for a house party. Help!

“Dear Yenta, I’m planning a baby shower and want to something fun with decorating baby clothes. Do you know where I could get big quantities of onesies, socks, hats, and blankets? And where I can get iron-ons?”

Okay, so you can get lots of onesies and tees from Santee Alley – much cheaper than other “discount stores.”  It’s located near the Fashion District between Santee St. and Maple Ave. at E.12th St. – and its open everyday from 10a-5p.  If you go on a weekend it, be forewarned – it gets a bit crazy, so arrive early. To avoid the freeways, just take Olympic all the way downtown. Should be a fun outing – and if you have other games at the party – you can get prizes and favors, too. So be sure to check out all the stores around the Alley. You’ll find some great cheap jewelry and other goodies…

FYI, Target is no great deal…try Marshalls, Walmart or Ebay for better bargains.

Also there’s Dollar Days: http://dollardays.com/i105307-wholesale-baby-onesies.html (you need to log in to see the prices…but it’s mentioned on several websites)…and http://www.wholesalebabyblanks.com/clothing/infant/ (try calling to see if they’ll sell to individuals since goods are sold in bulk).

For the iron-ons, it’s just special paper you use for your printer – here’s some offered on Amazon – also available at Staples and other big office supply stores.
Be sure to read customer reviews – some may be better than others…and people usually offer helpful hints.

Print photos, pictures, words, names, funny sayings, etc. Just pre-cut the images — or better yet, have everyone at the party cut them out!  Also think of things that parents would like – vintage pictures, favorite bands, sports teams, nicknames, etc.

<div”>HP also has an assortment of designs that are free for you to print out including alphabet lettering.

Additional info on the WTF Diet!!

Monday, August 17, 2009

I must be brilliant…You would especially know this if you read my blog piece on The What The Fuck Diet.

Hmmm, did you read/see the Time magazine cover story for August 17th, 2009?  “The Myth About Exercise: Of course its good for you but it won’t make you lose weight.  Why what you eat really counts,” by John Cloud.  Hello?  This is exactly what I’ve been saying/experiencing.

“The conventional wisdom that exercise is essential for shedding pounds is actually fairly new. As recently as the 1960s, doctors routinely advised against rigorous exercise, particularly for older adults who could injure themselves. Today doctors encourage even their oldest patients to exercise, which is sound advice for many reasons: People who regularly exercise are at significantly lower risk for all manner of diseases — those of the heart in particular. They less often develop cancer, diabetes and many other illnesses. But the past few years of obesity research show that the role of exercise in weight loss has been wildly overstated.” This I did not know.

Kosher salami, shopping and quick getaway

Ask the Yenta

“Dear Yenta, I am wracking my brain trying to find a nice getaway location for my 12-year-old daughter and me for Labor Day. Must be within a two-hour drive time and have nice shopping. And it can’t be Palm Springs, San Diego or Santa Barbara.

Have you thought about Ventura Beach?  THEN you can hit the Camarillo Outlets on the way!  Ooohhhhh…

“The city’s historic downtown district is picturesque and entertaining with numerous boutiques, antique shops (Ventura is home to more than 125 antique dealers), outdoor cafés, restaurants and art galleries. Meanwhile, other outdoor activities, such as biking on the town’s 13-mile coastal trail or hiking at the Channel Islands National Park – located a mere 14 miles offshore – tempt the true outdoor enthusiasts. Casual surf wear is welcome almost anywhere you go in town, so hang loose and head for the beach in Ventura.”

“Dear Yenta, On the east coast and Midwest, it’s pretty easy to find ‘Salami Sticks’ sold at the delis. In case you don’t know, salami sticks are kind of like a cross between salami and beef jerky. They look like a long thick pencil. I have yet to find these in a deli in Los Angeles. Is there any place in LA that sells deli-quality KOSHER salami sticks?”

You got it!!!

Silverlake Wine Tasting

image

My friends and I had an amazing time Friday evening at the Silverlake Wine Tasting at the top of Barnsdall Art Park by the Hollyhock House.

The Hollyhock House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, built in 1919–1921, as the residence for oil heiress and art patron Aline Barnsdall. The building is now the centerpiece of the city’s Barnsdall Art Park and is available to tour for a fascinating peek inside.

The city views from the park were just gorgeous, truly some of the best I’ve ever seen.  We brought blankets, food for a picnic, kicked off our….. click here to read more

Family first on Sepulveda is a great store for all things baby…or you can always check out craigslist. But, the best and safest idea is to hire a reliable company like Boo Boo Busters to come and baby-proof your entire home. Many times they have great gates you cannot buy retail.

“Dear Yenta, I’m looking for a homeopathic pharmacy, any ideas?”

The biggest and best pharmacy is The Santa Monica Homepathic Pharmacy
I would also try Whole Foods or Erewon  – the both have large selections of homeopathic products.

Sleep

Monday, July 13, 2009

What is it about sleeping??  When you get it regularly – you don’t even think about it.  BUT – when you don’t – you’ll do anything to steal some.  I’ll bet it’s what drug addicts go through…Like when you don’t get your drug (sleep) you go through a kind of withdrawal.  You’ll try anything:  pills, bio-feedback, drinking warm milk, a special pillow, etc.  Can you imagine if you could buy sleep, like real sleep – not the kind you get with Ambien?!?  What would “real” sleep be worth??  I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’m going insane if I don’t get a full night of sleep.  What’s the craziest thing you’ve tried to get sleep?

Bathrobes, appliqués and downgrades

Ask the Yenta

Dear Yenta, I need to get a serious corporate-style head shot done for my new boss – need someone in the BH area if possible.  Any suggestions?”
Absolutely!  Here’s a couple studios that do super work!

“Dear Yenta, I’m looking for cute personalized gifts for a newborn and toddler. I was thinking of a kiddy bathrobe?”

For online purchases l love Lillian Vernon – they have it all when it comes personalized gifts.  I’ve done everything from kid’s personalized lunch boxes to personalized notebooks with matching pencils.  It also offers incredibly cute kid’s bathrobes and towels at affordable prices – with the kiddies’ names!

All About Baby is also a great online store, they have tons and tons of personalized items and fantastic gift sets. It’s located in Thousand Oaks (though there’s no storefront).

The Elegant Child is a “by appointment only store” in Beverly Hills – or you can buy online. They have a really beautiful personalized appliqué blanket.

“Dear Yenta, Do you have any favorite tips you want to share with us?”

Do I?! Of course – here are some “in the moment” suggestions – especially for life in this economy.
1)    Men can usually get a cheap $8 haircut, but woman aren’t so lucky…so I say, don’t cut your hair this summer – just let it grow — wear a pony, try some new clips, throw on a funky headband. Get creative!  Then splurge on the color (unless you totally trust yourself).
2)    Cut down on your cable bill – downgrade to the basic channels and get outside for free and fantastic summer stuff.  I’ve listed some outdoor music ideas in a previous blog post.
3)    Want to get wild?!?  Instead of just visiting your local Farmer’s Market…check out a market in a neighborhood other than yours, explore! They’re everywhere any day of the week.
4)    Lastly, swim, eats lots of ice cream, wear sunscreen, and indulge in luscious lip gloss!!

“Dear Yenta, The non-profit I work for needs a videographer for 2 hours of filming, very light (almost no editing) and DVD burning/duplicating. Do you know anyone who needs the work and could give this lil’ ol 501(c)(3) a good price?”

My first thought is that Janet Strauss would be great for you!! She is really sought after, but is also committed to helping others, especially Charities.

Mobile restaurants are the rage right now in LA.  It seems like they’re everywhere.  Most are on twitter, where they announce their locations throughout the day.  Just think of the possibilities!!!

College, fireworks, outdoor weddings and “green” with beauty

Ask the Yenta

Dear Yenta, Do you know if Los Angeles City College is any good?”

I can’t give you a definitive answer on this, but click below to see what people are saying about LACC on YELP. My other suggestion is to make an appointment with a counselor and ask all the questions you want answers to.  Hope this helps!!

THE place to try is Vinita’s Beauty and Threading Studio. They have multiple locations!!!  Beverly Hills, Westwood and Pasadena.
PS. No kidding, I had four people ask me about this THIS week!!

“Dear Yenta, I have relatives coming to visit and they want to go on the Warner Bros Studio tour.  Where do I find info on this?”

WB Studio Tour
818-972-8687
$45 per person – tour lasts 2.5 hrs
The tour is really great. I’ve sent lots of people on it. The tours run every 20 minutes and they do sell out this time of year, so I’d book soon!

If your relatives are super fancy and want a longer, more detailed experience. There is a deluxe tour that is M-F at 10:20 am for $195 a person.

“Dear Yenta, we are now in graduation season and I would like to know — where are some great and affordable places in LA to get diplomas perma-plaqued and framed? Thanks!”

Here are two great places and both very affordable!!  An 8×10 at both retailers runs just under $60.

Southern California Trophy Company
Located in Downtown LA 213-746-6444
Southern California Trophy will take your most prized item and permanently mount on a laminated wood board, or encase in solid acrylic. The processes involve heat and high pressure to seal the document or item without damage. Once sealed, these items will never discolor or deteriorate.

Perma Plaque
Located in the Valley in Chatsworth all the ordering can be done online or call for an appointment.  They also make good looking boxes if you want to perma-plaque wedding invitations or birth announcements, etc. Plus there’s a large variety of colors and stains.

Patio Furniture

You can live outdoors “almost” year round in Los Angeles.  Whether you have an apartment with a balcony or a large backyard with a pool, you want to hang out in style, in something that’s comfortable, and makes great use of your outdoor space.  Recently, I’ve seen entire living rooms outside. But maybe you just want a cozy lounge chair to sit in to a read a book. So here are some shopping options:

The Patio Collection – They offer financing and have locations in West LA and Northridge
Victory Furniture – You can shop online or at its West LA and Santa Monica locations. (Oooh, they have an outlet in Santa Monica, too
Universal Patio Furniture – Family-owned in Studio City since 1939
