Brittany Tatum

A natural redhead and tomboy (though loves her MAC ‘Diva' lipstick), Brittany grew up as the daughter of the most talented and respected Black Belt husband and wife team in the Kenpo Karate World (sounds lofty and cheesy, but true). Both of her parents are world-famous martial artists and extremely cool (see http://www.ltatum.com). How amazing to be brought up with ancient philosophies, artwork, expression, and fierce fighter instincts!!

She turned 18, went to college, worked for Starbucks, left Cali, and immersed herself in Corporate America to make a "real" living in Graphic Design and Marketing. It was a creative profession that brought her financial stability (six figure salary), fancy health insurance (which she lacked as a child), and she also got married. As we all know, things aren’t always as they seem – she was unhappy, unfulfilled and in an abusive relationship.

A month before her 30th birthday she came back to California with a suitcase, $800 and an attitude determined to never sacrifice her true self again. Brittany named her Yoga Studio Be Alive Yoga - a focus on being present, alive, thriving in this world. Oh, and Brittany says there are no yoga police and one pose does not fit all (thank goodness!) She wants to be an example to women everywhere as someone that survived abuse and divorce and didn't give up. She now teaches both Kenop and Yoga, amazed every day by the beauty and grace of her students. Her first yoga DVD is on its way in January! Namaste.

Your favorite place in LA to have a cocktail?
Trader Vics has the most amazing Scorpion drink for two or four - giant bowls with fresh gardenias floating in rum goodness. It's enough to make any stress in your life melt away…have a designated driver ready - you will NOT be in the mood to drive, but you will be in rum heaven!

Your favorite LA place for bargain shopping?
One Sip Kim in Old Town Pasadena. She sells couture clothing for pennies on the dollar when she has a sale – amazing place to get that perfect dress for a premiere.

You could change one thing about LA - what would it be?
Nothing at all - I am an LA girl that lived in Alabama (long story) for three years and let me tell you, I missed this crazy, smoggy town every damn day! LA, I love you!

You’ve always wanted to go to this LA spot – but just haven’t made it there yet?
The New Getty…one day, right? It's such a schlep!

Your favorite LA extravagance?
The Pantages Theater - my boyfriend and I have seen so many shows there…we love to dress up and support the arts as much as we can – nothing like Old Hollywood architectural glamour. Fiddler on the Roof with Topal was a religious experience.

Your favorite neighborhood haunt?
Yoshido in San Marino - Kio the Sushi Chef is the best! Don't sit anywhere else, he makes the most amazing rolls and cuts the best sashimi every time.

Your favorite local getaway?
Palm Springs at the Two Bunch Palms Spa - the grotto is a seriously relaxing and healing experience even in December. My boyfriend and I go there as much as we can - a night at the grotto with some gambling at Aqua Caliente - the best weekend jaunt ever.

Your favorite place for cheap eats?
Trader Joes! I eat mostly raw and organic foods due to Celiac Disease and I can always drop by there in a pinch for amazing produce at great prices. I live on their "Think Thin" bars and Greek yogurt.

You always take out of town guests to this spot?
Hollywood Blvd. - a trip to LA is not complete until you see Spiderman and Batman AND signs that say "The End is Near!" It is always as treat! That and Olvera Street with a trip to the Original Pantry or Philippe’s for out of this world comfort food.

You're most connected to this charity or your last volunteer experience?
The LA Aids Walk - I am walking this year…it's my first "walk" so I am excited. Our team is called "Wholeness" and I am the Team Captain. I have a lot of friends who have been affected by AIDS and HIV so I wanted to raise money to help the situation as well as raise awareness....helping others is my passion. I also am a member of Amnesty International, the Tree People organization and Yosemite Association.
