Francis Jens Spitta

Francis Jens Spitta has been designing prints for the fashion and interiors communities for the last two decades. You’ve seen his work in the collections of Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, and many others. And now, he’s designing for his own eponymous collection – FJS. Yay!

Born an Aussie, Francis immigrated to America with his family and settled in sunny Los Angeles. As a young child he used to sit at his mother’s side while she sewed her own clothes, and, oh yeah, he knew he loved design! Smart and eager, he followed his passion and pursued a BFA in fashion design from Otis College of Art and Design. It wasn’t long before Francis’ work made its way onto the runways and into the showrooms of American and European designers. Fabulous!

His pillow collection is simple and inspired: a statement print on both sides. He’s taken the iconic images of his life and twisted them around a bit. Like, the stunning delicate handkerchiefs his grandmother owned (my absolute favorite of his collection), the batiks he wore in seventh grade, the groovy hippie skirts his mother wore, the globes and maps in his father’s office – these designs are on the pillows! Each cushion is lovingly hand sewn and hand printed in Los Angeles on fabric that feels like a cross between silk twill and a cool, crisp, cotton shirt. And – everything is machine washable. Thank you, Francis!

Besides working on his own designs, Francis considers himself a bit of an art freak. When he has extra time he’s usually researching a new artist he’s heard about or going to an art gallery.

If you ever get to meet Francis in person, be sure to say something funny, ‘cause he has the best laugh on the planet!!

Note: Nov. 12-14, catch a special trunk show of FJS pillows at Society of the Spectacle in Highland Park (contact store for more info.)

I don't drink but I love having coffee at "Intelligentsia" in Silverlake. They make the most delicious Cafe Lattes. They're so good your head will explode.

Your favorite LA place for bargain shopping?
Bargain shopping...I do a lot of that. I love the Hollywood Farmers Market, the flea market at the corner of Melrose & Fairfax on Sundays, and I do a lot of trading these days with my pillow line. I just got an amazing Zoe Crosher Photo. Google her. Her work is really smart.
