Kathy Freston, a health and wellness expert, is a New York Times best-selling author. Maybe you’ve heard of her book Quantum Wellness: A Practical and Spiritual Guide to Health and Happiness. In O Magazine, Oprah Winfrey wrote, “Kathy Freston struck a nerve for me by speaking of a higher level of awareness, what she calls ‘spiritual integrity’…Kathy cautions that the way to full consciousness isn’t to give up every poor choice at once. She says, ‘Lean into it. Don’t try to break a lifetime of bad habits overnight.’ I’m leaning.”

Kathy promotes a body/mind/spirit approach to health and happiness that includes a concentration on healthy diet, emotional introspection, spiritual practice, and loving relationships, among other tenets. Her work is focused on providing guidance for conscious and healthy living in our increasingly busy world. Kathy continually cites the proven value of “leaning into” change and the benefits of “progress, not perfection.”

Kathy focuses most of her work on the personal and far ranging positive effects of eating vegetarian. She was raised outside of Atlanta, GA and loved nothing more than chicken fried steak and collards with ham hocks. Now she touts leaning into a diet of whole grains, lentils, beans, veggie proteins, fruits and vegetables. She labels herself a "veganist" - someone who eats veggies for health, the environment, and for a sense of values or ethics. When she has down time Kathy curls up on the coach reading a favorite book and eating a bowl of Larry's Coconut Bliss Ice Crème, its soy, dairy and gluten free.) Right now she’s reading the galley of Jonathan Safran Foer's new book Eating Animals – and says “it's superbly written!”

Amazing, I am so there!!

Your favorite place in LA to have a cocktail?
Just about any hotel - W, Polo Lounge, Four Seasons, Beverly Wilshire...love a vodka martini straight up, extra cold, lots of olives!

Your favorite LA place for bargain shopping?
Target and Payless for the shoes...they are cheap because they are non-leather (perfect for a veganist) but you can find some great knock off styles!

You could change one thing about LA - what would it be?
I kind of love it exactly as it is. Obviously too much crime and traffic, but for the most part, it's pretty magical.

You’ve always wanted to go to this LA spot – but just haven’t made it there yet?
A hike up to the Hollywood sign (can you do that?)

Your favorite LA extravagance?
My yoga teacher, Scott Hobbs, comes to my house and hangs me upside down with ropes on a yoga wall.

Your favorite neighborhood haunt?
The hills of Franklin Canyon.

Your favorite local getaway?
The hills of Franklin Canyon.

Your favorite place for cheap eats?
Love The Veggie Grill...just opened the newest one on Sunset and Crescent Heights. Super delicious, all plant-based quick-serve food like burgers and wraps and sweet potato fries...and inexpensive (I wouldn't say "cheap") and healthy.

You always take out of town guests to this spot?
Venice Beach...we rent bikes and ride along the beach looking at the scene.

You're most connected to this charity or your last volunteer experience?
Humane Society of the United States. They are highly effective at changing the way we look at and treat animals. I loved the huge success of Prop 2 that won by a landslide in California...it phases out the cages for egg laying hens and gestating pigs.
