Ask the Yenta

Dear Yenta, I have a couple of kitchen knives that need sharpening – any suggestions? Thanks.”

Good question.  I’ve had the same set of kitchen knives for many years and I know I need a couple sharpened (ok, so I don’t cook that much, but still…)

Here are a some great places you can take your knives to:
Ross Cutlery – downtown
Gary’s Knife Sharpening Service – check website for farmers market locations where you can find him (Beverly Hills to Culver City).

But hey, here is the really great news!  Bristol Farms will do it for free and while you wait!  Yay!  They will do up to 5 knives at a time (straight-edged knives). Call ahead to make sure the service is available at your local store – and that there’s no line.

“Dear Yenta, I’m looking for a gift for a male co-worker – I’m at a loss for ideas. I know he goes to the movies a lot – otherwise, I’m at a loss….

I love giving gift certificates to Arclight – you can pick them up at the Sherman Oaks or Hollywood locations.

OR…I just read that director, Werner Herzog is signing copies of the English version of “Conquest of the Useless: Reflections from the Making of Fitzcarraldo.” Now this would be a super gift for the true film aficionado!!  5pm Saturday night.http://www.booksoup.com/

“I’m taking out my 10 year old niece this weekend.  Any ideas of places to go or activities?

This weekend at The Grove from 12pm to 5pm they are performances from all six of the Cirque du Soleil shows – add lunch and that’s a treat!!

I also love going to Color Me Mine for some pottery painting or head to Fashionology to design a cute dress or t-shirt – loads of fun!

Silverlake Wine Tasting

My friends and I had an amazing time Friday evening at the Silverlake Wine Tasting at the top of Barnsdall Art Park by the Hollyhock House.

The Hollyhock House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, built in 1919–1921, as the residence for oil heiress and art patron Aline Barnsdall. The building is now the centerpiece of the city’s Barnsdall Art Park and is available to tour for a fascinating peek inside.

The city views from the park were just gorgeous, truly some of the best I’ve ever seen.  We brought blankets, food for a picnic, kicked off our….. click here to read more
