Fun Happenings This Weekend

 

John Hughes Tribute this weekend! Double Features at The Egyptian on Saturday and Sunday: FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF & WEIRD SCIENCE at 8pm on 10/3.  Discussion in between films with FERRIS BUELLER’S Edie McClurg, Alan Ruck and Jeffrey Jones. And at 7pm on 10/4, SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL & PRETTY IN PINK. Discussion between films with Howard Deutch and Lea Thompson. SOOOOO AWESOME!!!
This weekend go to museums for free!  Museums-Free-For-All is a joint effort to present arts and culture to the diverse and myriad communities in Southern California. Twenty-four different museums–spanning art and cultural heritage to natural history and science, invite visitors to view their institutions free-of-charge. Includes the Hammer, MOCA, the Getty (always free, but this is a good excuse!), and the Santa Monica Museum of Art. Check the website for a full list of participating museums.

 

Verdugo Bar fun weekend! In honor of Oktoberfest, the vegetarian chef duo of Alex Brown and Evan George will be serving veggie beer brats,home-fermented kraut & Hefeweizen popsicles this Sunday from 1 to 4pm. An arm wrestlingtournament will take place simultaneously. Men and women are invited to register by emailing meandpotatoes@gmail.com. The West Hollywood Book Fair is on 10/4, this Sunday, 10a-6p. For the past seven years, this event has attracted many avid readers and book enthusiasts alike. Over 400 authors and artists will attend the 2009 edition of the WeHo Book Fair, with some 100 discussion panels, book signings, writing workshops, poetry readings, storytelling, and theatre. I’m sorry to say that every year I want to go and it just hasn’t happened…yet!

I found this great article on popular Yiddish words and had to share!  Also, just in case you did not know what the word “yenta” meant – here is the correct answer: a female busybody or gossip. The matchmaker in “Fiddler on the Roof” was named Yenta which is why so many people mistakenly think that yenta means “matchmaker.”
